What are the wrinkles, collagen and elastin?

Do you know what wrinkles are?

Learn below what’s causing them and how to prevent it!

I think that when we talk about our beauty and the preservation of our youth, the No. 1 fear is wrinkles! While we say the word wrinkle several times a day, do we finally know what is it and how is it created?

So, let’s start from the beginning to have a basic foundation in understanding our face and our skin. I will write them down and analyze them as simply as I can.

The wrinkle is created in the papillary skin, which is located just below the skin. The face makes about 15 contractions and involves an average of 10 muscles for a simple expression. We see this typically in Face Yoga exercises through which we actually want to build a movement slowly and steadily. In order for this to be done effectively we must have ensured the elasticity of our skin. Is it possible?

The elasticity of the skin is its ability to return to its original state after each contraction or stretch, without making wrinkles. Elastin and collagen are responsible for maintaining the proper elasticity of the skin.

Elastin is the basic food of our skin. Elastin is a protein, the most important of the 30 total elastic fibers, with elastic quality and it is a very important component of the connective tissue of the skin. The elastin through the elastic fibers is what can give the strength to a muscle to stretch even 100 times its length. The elastin content of human skin ranges between 2.7 and 2.17%. It is the main moisturizer of the skin and is formed by fibroblasts and as they reduce their production (due to aging) the skin begins to break down and relax.

The not so good news about elastin is that we are born with a nearly ready supply of elastin in our body and since we cannot increase it organically, the best we can do is to maintain it for as long as we can. And here it comes the debate that sunlight, stress, smoking, poor nutrition not only dramatically reduce elastin stores, but also degenerate its small reconstruction.

Collagen is a group of fibrous proteins that give elasticity to connective tissues. Collagen is one of the main proteins for our skin and is used as a source of amino acids that improve the skin. There are 28 different types of collagen in our body. It is not used as such by the body but is broken down into smaller molecules – amino acids. In this way it becomes easier to assimilate. Collagen in simple words acts as a “glue” to the connective tissues of the skin and creates a strong mesh that allows our skin to move safely and elastically.

After 35 years, however, its production is significantly reduced and even worse its production is not of good quality. However, its preservation and the production of better-quality collagen can depend a lot on us through diet (amino acids, vitamin C) and protection from age radiation.

Having briefly analyzed the elastin and collagen that maintain the elasticity of our skin, we move on to (which is now very easy to understand 😉) how wrinkles are formed.

The cause of the formation of wrinkles, as we said, is associated with the loss or degeneration of elastin and collagen. Over time, and due to many persistent movements, that we do for years on the face, gaps are created in the skin. This means that the connective tissue is disturbed and depending on the thickness of the skin, it appears as a line or as a wrinkle.

We have expression wrinkles and permanent wrinkles. Wrinkles of expression are the wrinkles that appear with movement and the permanent wrinkles are visible even at a rest phase of the face.

After excessive research and my experience on the skin, its function and anatomy, I will tell you that Face Yoga is one of the best natural ways to beat wrinkles. Now that we have discussed a little about elasticity, you understand that Face Yoga exercises work exactly where wrinkles are created, i.e., in the connective tissue. Through the strengthening of the muscles, the hyperemia of the face and its lymphatic detoxification, we simply increase the elasticity of the skin!!! And it is not just a theory, because I have seen it happening on my face with my own eyes!

Of course, as we all know very well, it is not just one thing that makes the difference, and our approach should be holistic. Proper and antioxidant diet, Face Yoga exercises, very good care of our skin, and detoxification with guasha, roller or whatever else you deem necessary and fits into your daily routine!

Love your skin and your face! It is your image and the photo of your soul!
